Last night, at about 10:00PM, George took Emmi and Izzie outside one last time for the night. I heard him yelling, I couldn't tell if he was yelling for Izzie to come back out of the farmer's field... Something that we ALWAYS have to do, or if he was yelling for me to come outside. When I went outside to check, he was holding Emmi and Izzie back from something, but it was so dark that I couldn't tell what, then he said, "There's a baby duck right by my feet!" I went over and picked up the sweet little baby duck to get him out of harms way... Emmi and Izzie were VERY curious! Once we got the dogs back in the house we sat with the duck for a bit. The little guy decided that we were his parents and followed us everywhere. It was chilly and rainy outside, and of course, we knew we couldn't just leave him in the yard, his mother was nowhere to be found. Somehow the little guy was abandoned. George made up a box for him, we put a towel and some grass in the box, and we fed him, he ate right out of my hand, so sweet. He slept very comfortably in the box... But now we have NO IDEA what to do with this sweet little baby duck. Once our veterinarian's office opens this morning, I am going to call to see if they know of a wildlife rescue near us.

(¸.•´ (¸.•` ♥ Now isn't that the cutest little duck?! I looked on the internet for what to feed him, and what to do to care for him, I've never been this close to a baby duck before... but it seems this kind of thing happens a lot, there were quite a few 'abandoned baby duck' stories.

awww.. so cute!!! I wonder how he got lost from his mother. Were there other baby ducks or just him? He's so cute. I would just keep him.
ReplyDeleteHi Eyelah, I wonder how he got separated from his mother too... There were no other ducks, just him all alone in the middle of our big back yard. I agree, he is so cute, and I would keep him too, but with our dogs, I'm not sure how that would work out.
Deleteso, so cute! What DID you feed him?
ReplyDeleteWe put a bug in the box, he wasn't too crazy about that... Then I read to chop up fruit and veggies very fine and offer that. So I chopped up lettuce, dandelions, clover and a tiny bit of apple and he ate right out of my hand.
DeleteHow adorable! I live in the cities center and a couple of ducks live there as well. A parc is a little walk away, but I guess they are not that fond of nature and quietness.
ReplyDeleteIsn't that funny, they prefer the city life!! lol!!
DeleteThis is one of the joys of living in the country. I know you will have a hard time parting with with Frederick when you find him a home. ( I love that you named him Frederick)
ReplyDeleteI agree Mom, it is one of the joys of living in the country! Sad that he got separated from his mom, but he seems so happy here with us, and he loves to be held! I don't even know if he's a "HE" or a "SHE" ~ But I thought 'Fredrick' was the perfect name. :)
DeleteThat is to adorable!
ReplyDeleteI think so too Meagan!! Thank you for visiting today!
DeleteAwww, poor little thing! I would be kind of excited to find one because they're just so cute. I hope the vet knows where you can take him!
ReplyDeleteHi Paige, I agree, it was exciting to find him! The vet told me to call the Dept. of Natural Resources... They gave me the number of a woman who rescues wildlife in this area, I have a call in to her.
DeleteMaybe he was the last one in the duck line following after mom, and got separated. He/she is so cute! Frederick is a cute name, you could make it Fredricka it turns out to be a girl!
ReplyDeleteSweet, sweet pics!
Thank you Sarah! Fredricka is a cute name too!!
DeleteOh my, he is about the most precious thing ever! This post made my day. :)
ReplyDeleteHi Rose, He really is precious! :) I'm so glad you enjoyed my post today!! Thanks so much for visiting!!
DeleteHe's adorable! Poor little fellow.
ReplyDeleteHi Gunilla, I agree, it's sad he lost his way, but he's safe and happy now and it was a neat experience for us. :) He really is adorable!
DeleteWhat a cutie!! My dad had a pet duck when he was growing up. I think he was actually the most loved family pet they ever had!
ReplyDeleteHi Natasha,
DeleteI can see why the duck was the most loved family pet for your dad growing up... They are just the sweetest little things. :)
Oh my goodness...he's adorable!!! I hope you find a shelter to care for him :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Edi, Yes, we found a good home for him, he sure is adorable!! I'd never been that close to a baby duck before... He loves to cuddle!! :)
Deleteoh, what a cutie...I vote for you to keep him. you can get duck feed at your local feed store. and once he gets bigger you can slowly introduce him to your dogs. most dogs (or cats) won't kill unless they are wild and hungry. We let our ducks and chickens range all over the place and all the other neighborhood pets leave them alone.

Thanks Debbi!! I would have loved to keep him, but he has a good home now and is very happy. :) It was sure fun to spend time with the little guy though!
DeleteThat's great that your ducks and chickens can roam free and the neighborhood pets leave them along... They are all friends, how sweet!! :)
So cute!! So glad you came to the rescue!
ReplyDeleteIt was sure fun to come to his rescue!! :) We enjoyed the experience!
DeleteI left you a comment and I'm on my travel computer, which I'm not used to, and I lost it! Please keep us updated on the little guy! We rehab a lot of orphaned animals at the clinic where I work. I wish you could bring it to us. Baby ducks and geese do very well.
ReplyDeleteYou can also contact your DNR, they might be able to give you a list of names.
Hi Sher,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info, my vet also told me to call the DNR and they gave me the number of a woman in this area who takes in, and rehabilitates wildlife. Now he's in his new home safe and sound! Yay! :) It was an exciting experience, and he is such a sweet little guy!
Great post! so wonderful that you could rescue him! I saw a duck family the other day with only three little ducklings, and I wondered if some of the other hatch-lings had gotten lost!
