The Saga of Our Broken Well... Final Chapter!

For all who have followed the saga of our broken well... It's FIXED!  Yay!  ...And we didn't have to dig a new one.  However, had we listened to the 'well guys,' we would have had a new well dug.  George wanted to try EVERYTHING first, and I'm sooooo glad that he did, it saved us a small fortune!  The biggest problem was the built up sediment on the screen.  It is FANTASTIC to have running water again!  And just in time, George hurt his hand, he had to have a couple stitches in his palm. Not a good place to be injured.  He's all bandaged up with a brace.  The doctor doesn't want him to move it much, lots of tendons and nerves right there.  It's not the first time he's hurt that same hand.  Some years ago, while working out on his homemade pull-up bar, the bar broke and he slit his hand open as he fell.  He severed the nerves and had to have surgery.  He has had numbness in his fingers ever since.  He is a bit accident prone, although he will profusely deny that!  He's okay now, and VERY happy to have a fixed well.  He certainly wouldn't have been able to lug those big water barrels right now!

I want to share a couple of sweet pictures with you!  Izzie LOVES Emmi and just now she was trying to snuggle with her.  Sweet!  Emmi wasn't quite as happy to snuggle, she finally got up and found a new place to nap.  Izzie looked sad.

The Story of a Broken Well

Back in February I wrote about our broken well, which happened during one of our worst winter storms of the season... It was a funny, yet not so funny post.  Here's the link to that post for those who may have missed it: Pictures of a Snowstorm

...So, it's now June and we are still faced with our broken well.  We knew we had to finish out the winter before trying to fix it, the ground needed to thaw... So we had to find another way of getting water to our house. We rotate three big barrels of water to the house.  I say we, but it's George and our son who have been hauling water here in the big barrels every other day for the last four months.  Now that may seem fairly easy... But NO!  They have to go get the water, bring it here and lug the barrels down to our basement (on a dolly) ~ Yes, it's been a rough time of hauling water to the house since February, it was especially 'fun' during the winter with the snow and ice! At least it's better weather conditions now that it's summertime.

Here's where we are now... We are trying to fix our well, hoping that we won't have to dig a new one... George has already replaced the galvanized metal piping with PCV piping, fixed the broken seal and cleaned the plugged up points... While that was part of the problem, it wasn't the entire problem.  Now he is working on cleaning the screen at the bottom of the piping.  Sediment has built up and we are hoping that once it's cleaned, then the water will fill faster and our well will work.  If this doesn't fix the problem, then we will have to dig a new well.  Unfortunately it's taking time for George to see if all his 'fixes' actually fixed the well, because he's only able to work on it mostly on the weekends.

There are quite a few funny moments that have occurred during our time with a broken well... It goes kind of like this: The well pump is temporarily bypassing the well and is hooked directly to the hoses in the barrels.  So yes, we have running water, but I can't tell you how many times we thought there was enough water for a shower and we'd run out mid shower... Usually that happened to me, hair full of shampoo... 20 minutes until I have to leave for work... Then there's the debate:  "Do Dishes or a load of laundry" ~ "Boil water for the spaghetti dinner or eat something different and save the water for a pot of coffee in the morning" ~ So, me being the worry wart that I am... Now I have to worry about things like flushing the toilet too many times and we may not have enough water to brush our teeth, or enough water to fill Izzie's water bowl, she's a big dog, it's a big bowl... Oh the stories, and some day they will be funny, I'm sure! LOL!

I must say, until we had no water I really didn't realize how much water is used in a day... Or how much we depend on it coming out of the faucet when we turn the knob!!!  I guess I always took water for granted, you can't do ANYTHING without water... I think that for the rest of my life any time I'm about to do anything 'water related' I will be asking the one question that I have said and heard so many times these past months;  "Is there enough water right now for me to... shower, do dishes, laundry... etc." LOL!

Pictures of A Snowstorm...

Okay... all I can do is laugh!  This has been quite an interesting few days here... First of all, our well ran dry and a new well has to be dug.  Probably not until spring, the ground is FROZEN solid.  Boy, I never realized how much we take water for granted!  You can't do much of anything without it!  Anyway, we have a huge hole in the yard where they were examining the well problem which is filled with hay, and now covered in about 4 feet of snow, due to all the snow drifting.  Temporary "fix" is a big tank filled with water in the back of Georges pick-up truck in the garage... hose leaked and the water ran all over the garage floor... now it's frozen.  We have to walk through the garage to get to the basement, and out the back door for Izzie to do her 'dogly duty'...  So, along with shoveling snow, my boys are scraping ice out of the garage.   The blizzard that hit last night brought high winds (I really thought our windows were going to break!) and lots of snow, our propane tank was scheduled to be filled today, they can't get here because of the road conditions... Hopefully we won't run out of propane, keeping my fingers crossed on that one!  Very thankful for our space heaters and for the fact that with all this high wind, we have not lost power! Unlike my daughter in Texas, who did lose her electricity this morning... Home due to the icey roads (snow day for her school), she and her dog, Emmi are bundled up and probably very board. Hopefully she has a good book to read!  This storm is something else all the way from Texas on up...

Just went outside, because at the moment the snow has stopped, and I took some pictures  that I thought you might enjoy seeing.

The shoveled path for Izzie :)

Yea! Bonus!!!  There is no ice or snow to be scraped off or swept off of my car because the high winds have very nicely piled it beside my car! :)

My prayers are with everyone, that all of you stay safe and warm!  You know the song:  "Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow"  ~ I'm changing the words to:  "Make it Stop, Make it Stop, Make it Stop" :)
