Where the Wild Things Are

I recently had a custom order for a birthday cake topper for a child's first birthday.  The theme of the party is 'Where the Wild Things Are' ~ That was a favorite book in our house when my kids were little, so I was very familiar with the characters.  'The book tells the story of Max, who one evening plays around his home making "mischief" in a wolf costume. As punishment, his mother sends him to bed without supper. In his room, a mysterious, wild forest and sea grows out of his imagination, and Max sails to the land of the Wild Things. The Wild Things are fearsome-looking monsters and Max is made "the king of all wild things", dancing with the monsters in a "wild rumpus". However, he soon finds himself lonely and homesick and returns home to his bedroom where he finds his supper waiting for him still hot.'

My customer sent me a picture of her little boy and a picture of their two dogs, which she also wanted to somehow incorporate in the topper, going along with the theme.  I thought it would be cute to put claws on one dog and horns on the other.  'Max' is in his jammies and barefoot, his cute little toes peeking out.  I created 'old fashioned' one piece jammies, with a little buttoned flap in the back.  He is King, wearing his crown and holding his wand...  He is so cute, standing approximately 4" tall, on a 3" base, with his little "dog-monsters" beside him.  I added some leaves and sticks around the edge of the base to give the topper the feel of the forest.

  3. Adorable! I've said it once but I'll say it again...You make the best keepsakes. The child will have something to keep forever that was not only designed special for him, but will remind him of that special event.

  5. What a perfect topper for the little one. I love the idea of the claws and horns, the one piece jammies and the crown and scepter.....but very favorite part are the buttons on the 'trapdoor' AND the crown. This will be a family heirloom and I think his mom is going to be a very happy!
