A Flooded Basement...

We have had constant rain here and are under flood watch in many areas.  The rain is expected to continue for quite some time.  Our rivers are swelling and many roads are closed.  We live right near a river and the creek that branches off the river, and runs along the back of our property, is rising too.  My daughter is a teacher, and her school had to cancel classes yesterday due to flooded roads.  I hope everyone affected stays safe, and drives carefully.  Well, aside from a lot of rain, we still haven't seen too many signs of spring here in Michigan... Not many blooming trees, just the gray look of winter... No colorful flowers popping up, just puddles of rainwater.  There is a bit of green grass here and there.  With all the rain we are getting, we are sure to see spring colors arrive soon, but in the meantime all this rain has caused our basement to flood, three inches of water down there on Tuesday night!  Luckily George had built all the shelving for storage about five inches off the ground, so no boxes or keepsakes were damaged.  However, our couch and ottomans were sitting in the water, as well as all of our exercise equipment.  What a mess!  George bought a pump, but it was slow going, and the water was coming in rapidly.  The kids helped to haul the water out of the basement, it took hours, finally calling it a night at about 11:OOPM!   The smaller pump didn't keep up at all, so George had to purchase a more heavy duty pump, and that one worked better, but I swear it sounded like it was going to burn up!  The basement flooded because the drain lines had become clogged with roots and dirt, so on Thursday George rented some kind of auger or fish steel to clear the lines... (I think it's called a sewer snake)... And finally on Thursday, after about three hours of George working on it, one drain cleared!!  Yay, now George will move on to the second drain.  Water, it's so damaging and such a lot of work!  We have certainly had our share of water issues through the years.  One of the other major water issues happened a couple of winters ago when our well broke, that was NO FUN!  You can read all about the Saga of our Broken Well HERE.  It seemed never ending... And then it continued HERE.  We had to haul water IN then... This time we had to haul the water OUT!  lol!

  1. oh, that does not look like fun...I pray spring comes quickly for you, but we're suppose to get rain down here (NC) all next week. Our house is on high ground so all we worry about are tornadoes. lol. The problem with weather issues, it takes away from our crafting time! Take care of yourself.

  2. Read this and went eek! I work for a flood irrigation company and there are times when my entire day is devoted to water run wild. Having the right pump can make all the difference in the world as you try to control the damage. My thoughts are with you and George.

  6. Oh Trina! How truly awful!
I dealt with a flooded basement once where we lost a lot of stuff.
I'm glad most of you things (and you!) are OK.

  7. No fun at all! I'm glad you were able to get the water out and get your drains cleared, but I sympathize with the mess. Our drain plugged a couple years ago and we had the same mess!
